MONTGOMERY, AL – At least two people were killed and a dozen others injured in a mass shooting in downtown Montgomery, Alabama, after multiple gunmen opened fire in a crowded nightlife district on Saturday, Oct. 4. Authorities are describing the attack as a “senseless” and “reckless” act.
Montgomery Police Chief James Graboys said during a news conference that the shooting erupted around 11:30 p.m., sparked by a dispute that “could have been avoided, should have been avoided,” according to Montgomery Mayor Steven Reed. Law enforcement officers were in the area when gunfire broke out, but the chaotic nature of the incident resulted in numerous casualties.
Authorities are actively searching for suspects, offering rewards of $50,000 from the city and $5,000 from Central Alabama CrimeStoppers for information leading to arrests. Local officials confirmed that federal agencies—including the FBI, the U.S. Marshals, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives—are assisting in the investigation.
How the Shooting Unfolded
Police believe that the mass shooting began when one individual was targeted, after which multiple people in the crowd pulled out firearms and began discharging them. “One individual got targeted and then an exchange of gunfire erupted,” Graboys explained. “When that exchange erupted, multiple people in the crowd … pulled their own weapons and started discharging.”
The two people killed have been identified as 17-year-old Jeremiah Morris and 43-year-old Shalanda Williams. Of the 12 injured, five suffered life-threatening injuries, while seven sustained non-life-threatening injuries. Seven of the injured victims are under 20 years old, with the youngest being just 16. Two of those injured were reportedly armed.
Authorities recovered multiple weapons at the scene, and investigations continue into who was responsible for initiating the violence.

Mayor Reed expressed his grief and outrage over the violence. “My heart is weeping for the families,” Graboys said. “I am incredibly angry.” He emphasized that law enforcement would exhaust every available resource to solve the case.
