The Seattle Mariners entered Game 4 of the 2025 American League Division Series (ALDS) against the Detroit Tigers with a 2-1 series lead and a chance to clinch their first postseason series victory since 2001. However, a 9-3 loss at Comerica Park on Wednesday evening has evened the series at 2-2, setting the stage for a decisive Game 5 back at T-Mobile Park on Friday.
A Game of Missed Opportunities
The Mariners initially seized control of the game with a 3-0 lead, thanks to early contributions from Dominic Canzone and Cal Raleigh. However, the Tigers mounted a comeback, scoring nine unanswered runs, including home runs by Riley Greene, Javier Báez, and Gleyber Torres. Mariners reliever Gabe Speier, who had been effective earlier in the series, gave up crucial runs in the fifth inning, allowing Detroit to tie the game and eventually take the lead.
Manager Dan Wilson's Perspective
Despite the setback, Mariners manager Dan Wilson remained optimistic. "Everything's in front of us, and these guys have done this all season long," Wilson said. "Where they get in tough situations and they know exactly what to do and they do fight back and they do bounce back. I'm not worried about that at all, and no better place to do that than at home." Wilson emphasized the team's resilience and confidence heading into the final game of the series.
Player Reactions
Catcher Cal Raleigh echoed his manager's sentiments, acknowledging the Tigers' fight but emphasizing the Mariners' need to stay focused. "You know going into the playoffs that you're not going to roll teams like that,” Raleigh said. “There's a lot of fight in the other clubhouse, too. Stay even-keeled. Flush it. Forget it. Go to the next game.”
Shortstop J.P. Crawford also expressed confidence in the team's ability to rebound. “When you get knocked down, you either stand up or you stay down,” Crawford said. “And we’re going to get back up and fight.”
Looking Ahead to Game 5
The Mariners now face a winner-take-all Game 5 against the Tigers, with Detroit's ace Tarik Skubal set to start. Seattle is the only team to have defeated Skubal in three starts this season, including a victory in Game 2 of this ALDS. The Mariners will need to replicate that success to advance to the American League Championship Series.
