The mixed martial arts world has lost one of its most influential figures. Duke Roufus, a renowned kickboxing champion turned world-class MMA coach, died Thursday at the age of 55. His passing has left a deep void among fighters, fans, and peers who credit him with transforming modern MMA training.
Roufus was more than just a coach—he was a mentor, motivator, and father figure. Through his Roufusport MMA Academy in Milwaukee, he guided multiple world champions, including Anthony Pettis, Sergio Pettis, Tyron Woodley, and Ben Askren. Known for his innovative striking systems and detail-oriented coaching, Roufus built one of the most respected gyms in combat sports.
Anthony Pettis: “Together We Did the Impossible”
Anthony Pettis, one of Roufus’ most successful students and a former UFC lightweight champion, shared an emotional tribute on social media.
“Together we did the impossible,” Pettis wrote. “You believed in me when no one else did. You taught me to believe in myself, to fight with purpose, and to carry myself like a champion inside and outside the cage.”
Pettis and Roufus shared an unbreakable bond that spanned over a decade, highlighted by Pettis’ iconic Showtime Kick and championship run under Roufus’ guidance.
Tyron Woodley, Belal Muhammad, and Others Pay Tribute
Former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley described Roufus as “a genius and a genuine soul,” adding,
“Duke changed my entire approach to fighting. He taught me more about mindset than mechanics.”
Belal Muhammad, a top welterweight contender, also honored his coach:
“He gave me a home when I didn’t have one in the sport. Everything I’ve achieved is because of him.”
Messages of condolence and admiration flooded social media from across the MMA world, including UFC fighters, trainers, and promoters.
A Legacy Beyond the Cage
Before becoming a coach, Roufus enjoyed a decorated kickboxing career with multiple world titles. His transition into coaching redefined modern MMA striking, blending traditional kickboxing techniques with the evolving demands of mixed martial arts.
Under his leadership, Roufusport became a proving ground for elite fighters and a beacon for young athletes chasing greatness. His legacy continues through the countless fighters and coaches he mentored.
“Duke was the heartbeat of Roufusport,” said longtime friend and gym co-founder Scott Joffe. “He inspired everyone he met — not just to fight better, but to live better.”
